Earth fingers

April 22nd, 2008

In between Sanitation and Intro to Culinary Arts 1, today I happened onto a demo called Greening small spaces.

The owner of the wonderful earth fingers in the photo is Chef Cone, a friendly chef who runs the Organic Club at school and doesn't mind messing with compost and worms. Wish I'd taken a picture of him pretending to eat one of the worms in the compost, very much à la A fish called Wanda.

I didn't even know about this demo, but it happened to be in my lab just before my class and I found out about it when I dropped my knife roll and other paraphernalia on my way to the library. As soon as I saw the set up, I decided to stay and forgot all about the library.

Chef Cone talks fast and you get the sense he's passionate about the subject of carbon footprint and reducing transportation and production waste. He also sounds like he's done this demo before and loves an audience.

After making a wonderful heirloom tomato salad, he quickly prepared a cucumber salad and a cucumber lemonade.

Cucumbers are not really my thing, but I am happy that I tried the lemonade, because it was definitely worthwhile. I can't believe I enjoyed something containing cucumbers.

After the quick dishes, he went on to talk about planting herbs and vegetables in small spaces and demonstrated how to plant seeds in tiny fiber planters…

and small plants in larger planters.

At the end, he wrapped up his wares in no time and was gone while we were already setting up for class.

And he left us the dishes to enjoy.

Yum! That salad looks good! So, did the cucumber lemonade taste lemony, at all? Or was it just cucumber taste?
  2. Francesca Says:
Lydia, The salad was very good and the cucumber lemonade didn't taste like pure cucumber (which I don't like), but wasn't your regular lemonade either. I don't know how to describe it, but it was refreshing and novel.

darn. I was hoping you had "memorized" the cucumber "lemonade." We eat a lot of cucumbers in this part of the world LOL.

I'm kinda laffing at the image of you dropping your knife roll and other stuff - this is starting to sound like Laurel & Hardy going to culinary school. Every week a new klutz. Is it just the stress and stain of this new situation, or are you always like this? And I ask that in the kindest way possible. *S*

Sounds like a much better use of your time than the library! :P I'll be Googling cucumber lemonade. Think you can get your hands on the recipe?
